The Missions was commissioned to celebrate and honor the collection of five 18th century Spanish Missions located along the San Antonio river which have been named a World Heritage Site by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization. Four of the five designated Missions make up the San Antonio Missions National Park and include: Mission Conception, Mission San Jose, Mission San Juan Capistrano and Mission Espada. Also included in the World Heritage Site designation is Mission Alamo which played a critical historic role in the creation of the State of Texas.
The work consists of five musical sections each describing monumental events which have played a pivotal role in the history of the Missions.
