As The World Watched

Grade 4    12 min 38 sec
A programmatic work based on the composer’s view of some of  the violent events that have happened and continue to happen in our nation and around the world, The abuse that  mankind has perpetrated upon each other, man’s inhumanity to man, and the taking of human life —for no reason at all—are the major points of the piece. The work is divided  into three sections:

shock and disbelief, anger and depression. Each section paints the deep

emotions that such troubling events bring forth in many of us.
As the World Watched was commissioned by the band directors in the 10th district of the Georgia
Music Educators Association.

Great Is Thy Faithfulness  Grade 4    6 min 48 sec
Great Is The Faithfulness is an extremely popular Christian hymn written and first published in 1923. The
music was written by William M. Runyan and the lyric comes from a biblically based poem written by
Thomas Chisholm. The hymn appears in most hymnals and has been recorded by hundreds of recording
artists. This symphonic band setting by Charles Booker captures the rich harmonies of the original hymn
and explores the rich sonorities of symphonic winds.

Adventure!

 Grade 3    4 min 18 sec
This exciting new concert/festival work opens with a driving rhythmic theme and then moves quickly into a robust lyrical section featuring the array of woodwinds. That theme evolves into
a full band statement. The opening theme is then reintroduced and brings the work to a raucous  and exciting close. Nathan describes his creative process in giving birth to this work as an exercise of capturing the joyous times of his life and should connote a wealth of thoughts of happiness, sheer excitement, introspective wonder and truly positive thoughts in reaching for that next "Adventure!"

Spirit Of Hope    Grade 3    6 min

Spirit of Hope was written for the Lewistown (PA) Community Band, of which the composer is a member.  The piece was premiered in 2017 by the Messiah College Symphonic Winds, under the direction of Dr. William Stowman.  The title comes from Romans 15:13, which says: "May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit." (NIV) Ideally suited for contest and festivals of all types.

December 7th, 1941    Grade 3    2 min 40 sec
This contemporary concert march was written as a tribute to the lives lost during the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. 2019 marks the 78th anniversary of the world-changing event. While the march opens with the sound of an air raid siren to put in perspective the horrific events of that day, it resolves into a rich bombastic  concert march that is suited for any concert, contest or festival program.

Suite Of African American Spirituals    Grade 3    7 min 50 sec
Suite of African American Spirituals was arranged in the winter of 2017-2018 and is comprised of the following Spirituals: “Every Time I Feel the Spirit,” “Deep River”, “Down by the Riverside”, and “Swing Low.” The term "spiritual" is derived from the King James Bible translation of Ephesians 5:19: "Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord." A
“spiritual” is a type of religious folksong that is most closely associated with the enslavement of African people in the American south. The songs proliferated in the last few decades of the eighteenth century leading up to the abolishment of legalized slavery in the 1860s. The African American spiritual constitutes one of the largest and most significant forms of American folksong. Freedom songs based on “spirituals” have also helped to define struggles for democracy in foreign countries.
